Online Games – Are You Game For This

Who has not heard of online games these days? Internet has opened up a whole new vista for the entertainment and gaming industry which is booming and going strong with huge annual growth rates of 40-45% year on year. All you need to play an online game is a home computer and broadband connection. You don’t even need spare time; it sucks you in. Well, if you don’t have a computer at home but still want to play, don’t loose heart; you can play them on your cell phone.
Online Games and Pass Time
Innovative online games, apart from the traditional chess, poker and Mahjong, are real brain teasers. While these are games which need two players, who you find always online, there are still more which can be played individually. Games such as solitaire, crossword, sudoku are individual games.
Gaming Softwares and Techniques
Some online games require you to download and install their softwares before you can begin play. These softwares help save your personal settings for those games. But mostly, you can play any game without having to download anything at all.
When you log on to play a non individual game, you will be automatically matched against someone who is better than you are. It is frustrating to loose a match, albeit against an unknown player. If you wonder, all but you are skilled, take a look here. There are softwares called as ‘game cheat’ available to help you on the instant! Game cheats level out the playing field and soon you can play with experts without them knowing whether you are using a software aid.
How do you benefit from game cheats? Turn on cheats when you begin playing. Cheat predicts obstacles and opportunities and suggests the best move for you. It can also tell you the next possible move of your opponent, with dependable certainty. You can buy them from their websites for charges not big if you are serious on winning online. Some companies give away trial versions which you can upgrade later. These softwares can be availed for games like game cube, X-Box and the PS 2; and are being continuously upgraded.
A word of caution while playing online games would not be out of place. Play on trusted websites only as most gaming sites install spywares scrupulously onto your hard disk.

Online Bingo Games

Online bingo games are really exciting but the entertainment value it offers is not the only attraction. Online bingo players are winning huge progressive jackpots at some of the most popular cyber bingo halls.
With so much money at stake it is no wonder online bingo games have become so popular in recent years. New and experienced players are attracted to online bingo sites by the huge progressive jackpots on offer.
Let's take at look what you can win by playing cyber bingo. We'll also consider how much it costs to play online.
What you can win:
There are usually at least two ways to win at these games. When you play an online bingo game you stand a chance of winning the prize pool and/or the jackpot.
Every time a player buys a bingo card a percentage of the purchase is placed into the total prize pool. That means that every player is contributing to the size of the prize fund. The prize pool grows as more and more bingo cards are bought.
To win the prize pool you need to be the first player to complete your card. Prize pools are dependent on the number of active players in the bingo hall and the cost of the bingo tickets. More players usually mean larger prize pools.
The jackpot is usually a progressive jackpot and a very small percentage of cost of every ticket is added to the total jackpot fund. To win these huge progressive jackpots you'll need to complete your online bingo card within a certain number of balls.Progressive jackpots can be as big as $2000 or more.
What it costs:
For many new bingo players one of the first questions asked is, "how much does it cost?". Well the beauty of the game is that it is really simple to learn and really cheap play but you stand a chance of winning big prizes.
The price of a single online bingo card may be about 10c! And with a single ticket you could easily win a huge progressive jackpot.

Play Some Card Games

Are you looking for a way to spend a rainy afternoon with friends? Or are you trying to plan some fun activities for your next big party? If so, the answer to your questions is simple: card games. It seems so obvious, but perhaps that is exactly the reason you forgot about it.
Card games are great for a lot of reasons. One of the best reasons that card games are great for almost any social gathering or party is because they allow people to be social and enjoy time together. There is nothing worse than planning a party for friends that includes nothing other than watching movies. Who wants to gather at a social event and then do a totally non-social activity? Card games are great because they offer more focus and entertainment than simply allowing people to mingle and yet they maintain the social atmosphere. People can share in great conversations while spending hours playing card games.
Another great reason to include card games at your next event is because they are fun. I cannot think of many people that do not enjoy good card games. Card games are tried and true fun for almost everyone. It can be hard to keep people entertained with the variety of new games that are on the market simply because people do not know how to play them. It can be easier and just as much fun to entertain people with card games that they are familiar with. Something about a great hand of rummy or euchre never gets old.
If you have invited people to your party that are not familiar with the classic card games, don't worry because it is easy and fun to teach card games to people. That is another great benefit of card games. You will not have to waste half of your time teaching the card games. Most people pick them up easily. So allow yourself to invite people who are masters at your favorite card games and who are novices at the games. Everyone can be having fun together in no time.
Card games are great because there is such a variety to choose from. Don't like euchre? Don't worry, you can try poker or rummy instead. Card games provide literally endless hours of fun. If your guests have been playing poker for hours, change it up and teach them canasta or bid euchre instead. There are enough good card games to keep any party nothing but fun. Look no further than card games to make your next party or social gathering the one people will not want to miss.

An Overview Of Online Games

Online games are becoming more popular with each passing year. As more people connect to the internet and install Shockwave or Java on their computers, a huge market will open up for free online games. The prices on computers are dropping, and this means that more people with have access to independent games. Many seasoned gamers are annoyed by the politics which often exist in large video game companies.
Many gamers are also looking for games which allow them to interact with other players. Even with the success of online fighting games, many developers have not bothered to create them. MMORPGs are becoming more popular than ever before. Players want to interact with each other and create their own identities in the digital world. This is the direction in which I believe free online games are headed today. As the internet becomes more widely used, people want interaction more than graphics.
Because the video game market of today is so saturated, the cost of these games have dramatically decreased. It doesn't cost much money to develope a quality game if you know where to look. This will open the door for many independent game companies to design games which are an alternative to the mainstream console games which currently dominate the market. Shockwave and Java are tools that have allowed many people to cost effectively produce free online games.
As the graphics, gameplay, and storylines of these games continue to improve, more people will play them. While the PC game market declined at the end of the 1990s, it is expected that independent online games will fill this void. Multiplayer online games should be free or very cheap to play. Because the cost to produce them is so low, there is no reason why players should have pay $60 to buy one game. The low cost trend for online games can be seen at the Shockwave website, where they charge as littles as $9.95 for a game.
Many online games can be downloaded directly onto your computer. There is no need to go out to the store or order them through the mail. The games are available to play as soon as you download them. In addition to interactivity, people want things quickly. We live in a society in which virtually everything moves fast. When people want to play games, they want them as soon as possible. This is a demand that free online games can meet.

RPG Games For Beginners

Part I – characters, attributes and experience explained
For the ones of you that don’t know RPG stands for Role Playing Game, and is one of the most played type of game nowadays.
You are the main hero, and you interact with other characters also called NPC-s ( or Non Playable Characters if you’re playing single player). They will give you quests to do, and you have to do them, in order to get experience and advance to higher levels.
The story has the main quest, that will end the game when finished, and usually a lot of side quests, that will help you develop your character. The side quests are not necessary, but will get you deeper into the story and sometimes that is really worth it!
Most RPG games allow you to choose your type of character at the beginning. Usually there are several types of characters, all with different attributes, but there are three main categories to choose from: wizard, fighter and archer. These will take different names and attributes and will be further more differentiated into subcategories, depending on the game. For example, the wizard can become specialized on different categories of spells, like earth, water, dark magic, white magic, fire, lightning, nature.
How do you grow your character? Well this depends from game to game, but basically you have :
- life, called life points in many games representing your health
- mana, or mana points representing the wizardry point you have left( these point allow you to do spells, if you don’t have them you won’t be able to cast spells)
- stamina, also found by other names, depending on the game, this represents how much time you can run, of do special moves.
Besides these three there are a few other primary attributes like:
- strength – representing the strength of your character, you’ll have to put points here if your character is a fighter.
- dexterity –representing the dexterity of your character, usually important for archers
- intelligence – representing the intelligence of your character, usually important for wizards.
There may appear some more primary attributes depending on the game but don’t worry they are usually explained!
Experience – this is heart of the game, and this (along with the story) will keep you in front of the computer for days! Basically, when you kill monsters you get experience, you also get experience when you do the quests. This experience is used to grow in level, making you stronger and able to battle with more and more monsters. Take care how you spend your experience, because in the later part of the game it’s important to be strong so you can finish the game. Usually it’s best to choose a line of evolution at the beginning and keep it until the end of the game !
Ok, we’ve reached the end of part one, hope I was able to enlighten you a little concerning the mysteries of RPG games. See you in part two!

Children's Online Games

While the World Wide Web expands, more and more individuals are getting online for all of their necessities and for their enjoyment. Online games are just one of the many different ways to enjoy the internet. But, there is a newer trend happening right now. Instead of just throwing our attentions to online gaming atmospheres, we can also allow our children to enjoy the wider world of entertaining online. But, is it safe? And, even if it is, should we allow our children to be using online gaming at all? Is it any better than them sitting in front of a television?
Many parents simply do not have the time to monitor all the activity their children are having online. All parents need to know that there are many predators online that are seeking out our youngsters. But, there are ways to prevent them from coming near to our children. For example, in online gaming rooms, you can easily disable chatting and interaction. You can also disable instant messages as well. Yet, an even more effective manner for protecting our children while they are online is to simply keep the computer they will be using right in the living room, the kitchen or in any area that is open where you can see what's going on just by turning your head. When parents are aware of what is going on while their children are online, they can keep their children better protected. And, it’s never too soon to talk to your children about stranger danger even on the computer.
Okay, but what about the gaming? Should we allow our children online to play games?
It is important to break down some age levels here. For children who are young, it is essential to allow them time to learn about computers, but you need to do it in a one on one situation. In these cases, there are many games that are actually quite beneficial for them to play. Many games can teach reading skills, math skills, and many other aspects of learning. And, because it is fun, kids simply love to do it. They enjoy the colors, the sounds, and the idea of playing with Mommy or Daddy. It’s a great time for some bonding as well.
Then, we can look towards the older age. Those who enjoy cartoons on television will love the games that focus around these topics. And, you'll find many games that do. Online games like these can help with motor skills and computer usage skills. But, why not teach them a little by getting them into a different type of game, one that will challenge them. For example, word puzzles and just puzzles in general can stimulate the mind in many ways. Or, teach them a little history with a program like Oregon (or Amazon) Trail in which they need to survive a treacherous trek through the wilderness. Even older children can benefit from the "Sim" games as well. The less violent ones are better because they teach your little entrepreneurs to use many skills to build cities, buildings, companies...you get the idea.
When it comes to allowing teens online, you really need to allow at least some online time. At that age, they are into communicating with their friends through email and instant messages, but interactive games are very popular. Competing against friends is a definite need that many kids have. Is it any worse or any better than a Playstation or Xbox system? Probably not, but at least they are interacting with others. And, you can somewhat monitor their actions or limit their internet exploring when you provide them with what many ISP's are offering and that is parental controls on accounts set up just for kids.
So, where does that leave us and the online gaming world? Should children be allowed online? Yes, we believe that kids of all ages should at least have the opportunity to learn how to use the computer. It is an essential skill. But, what about playing games? Yes, they need this too. In a safe environment, there are few other places that you can play so many games for a low cost. They can learn from them as well. You can monitor just what they are doing. If you are a parent trying to figure out where you stand with your children being online, consider it a learning experience to allow them to surf with you, even if it’s just once. Then, you will be able to see just what is out there to offer your children and how well they enjoy it.

Games To Consider When You're Event Planning

Children love so many things about birthday parties. The food, the birthday cake and the ice cream are at the top of their lists. Right below those favorites is party games. When children attend a birthday party they look forward to the party games they will get to play. A big reason for this is that party games usually have a winner and that winner might get a prize. What child doesn't love a prize?
If you happen to be in charge of event planning for a child's birthday party you are in the enviable position of having a whole host of games to choose from. One of the first things to consider is the age of your young guests. Obviously if you are in charge of entertaining a crowd of three-year-olds you'll need to choose an activity that doesn't require the player to have a long attention span. Standard favorites like pin the tail on the donkey and hot potato are fun for children who haven't mastered skills such as reading yet. Another fun game that keeps children laughing is to have them sit on air filled balloons while trying to pop them. This generally results in them rolling around on the floor as they bounce off the balloons.
For older children you might consider a treasure hunt. This is a great activity that can keep children busy and occupied while you tend to the other aspects of the event. You just hide some objects in your home and draw out maps for the children to search for them. Another twist on this idea is the scavenger hunt. In this instance you give the children a list of items they have to search for and whoever finds all of the items first, wins a prize. If your child is really enthusiastic about this idea you can make it the center of your event planning process. Perhaps choosing a scavenger hunt theme for the entire party including invitations shaped like a magnifying glass or a hunt to find the pizza you've hidden in another room for dinner. Children love activities like this and it's a great way to encourage their junior detective skills.
For the more mature crowd, you can incorporate fun activities into your event planning as well. Perhaps a game of charades or a fun board or card game will entertain a more adult crowd. These types of games are a great way to socialize and they also act as stress relievers. Many men do this already when they have their weekly poker night with their buddies. They may not view it as an event, but it's a great way for them to get together and challenge one another's skill.
Depending on the event you are planning, it can be a plus to play a game or two. It keeps the event moving along and the guests will appreciate having a fun activity to engage in. The smaller ones will appreciate it even more if they win a prize for their efforts.

The Games With The Higher Payouts

For the professional gambler, what is characterized as a fun game is obviously the ones with higher chances of payouts. How could it be fun for any of us when we lose money? Just losing money to your spouse for shopping already hurts. Think about losing it to a casino. Egad!
Blackjack and Video Poker are games that have high payouts. This makes these games more enjoyable to play for gamblers.
The payout for blackjack depends on many small variations of the rule. Some of these rules that should be given concern are: how many decks of cards are being used? Can a player double and split bets on few hands? Does the dealer peak for blackjack before the players? Can the player still surrender when the dealer has an ace for an up card?
There was a time that players were given better odds in online blackjack. Now, the odds have been changed once again to favor the casinos. The situation could be described simply as a marketing strategy. They may have given better odds to make players enjoy their winnings for a while. It eventually makes the player want to play more.
Now, to win better at blackjack even if the odds are against you, all you need to do is learn basic strategy.
Video poker is another game that can give better payouts. However, not all video poker games are the same. Before starting to play video poker, look at the pay tables in front of the video poker game. Then compare the pay tables with other machines. If you have chosen a machine with a bad pay table, you are just financing the casino's next casino.
After finding the table that has fairly good pay table rates, you will now have the odds against the machine. It could even exceed 100% in the longer run.
You won’t even have to rely on your lucky charms here. If played properly, the edge will be given to you. But that’s if you play perfectly. But there are very few players that can be able to do so.
Sometimes, video poker gives you a higher chance of winning compared to blackjack. However, the variance in rules in video poker is greater. It means that when playing video poker, your money will go up and down like a roller coaster.
This is because to be able to get a higher return in video poker, you’ll need a Royal straight Flush. The chances of achieving that combination in video poker are only one in 40,000. It means that you’ll be playing a whole lot of poker just to get that high return.
However, video poker also offers the player chances of a single big win with only a small bet. This can not happen in black jack.
Bottom line: if you are looking to have a good time by winning money, play video poker or black jack.

The Popularity Of Preschool Games

Throughout the web, you will see that one of the most targeted audiences for games is for children under school age. Are preschool games good for the child? And, should you be using them as part of your child's early education? With so many marketing geniuses working on promoting these games to parents of younger children, it is wise to take a step back and analyze the game prior to choosing it as the right one for your child.
There is no doubt that preschool games are popular. Some of the biggest names in preschool television usually star in their own computer game. Other games will showcase various other 'stars' of preschool television. But, the question is, should you expose your young child to these games?
To answer that question, you may want to consider why you shouldn't do so. If you are concerned with overexposure to television and computers, this can be controlled and therefore not a problem. If you are wondering if your child can actually gain anything from these games, you can rest assured that they will learn some, but not everything. You still need to invest time and energy with one on one learning as well.
Like preschool television programming, a little really can go a long way with these games. By taking the time to explore the game first you will know if it is appropriate for your child. And, you can then tell how interested they are in the game as well. This is a key factor in children enjoying the game in the first place.
When the child does enjoy games like these, they will be fun to play and therefore they will want to play more often. Repetition is the key factor in these games. The repetition that is offered will allow the child to gain considerable amounts of knowledge through the use of the game. But, that does not mean that you need to expose them to the game all the time.
You can and should take the time to wisely choose the games that you expose your child, especially your toddler to. You will find that some games offer an advanced level of educational skills while others offer somewhat simpler ideals. This makes them perfect because you can then choose games that are appropriate levels for your child. Inside the games, you will find a wide assortment of skill learning. The alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes and even simple math and reading can be gained from these games.
What makes these types of preschool games so attractive is that they teach the information in a fun, easy to follow way so that children can become engrossed with it and therefore learn from it. But, how much is enough and how much do you expose your child to the games? It is wise for each parent to make this individual choice since it all depends on their needs, beliefs and abilities. But, it is safe to say that computer use and television use should be limited at least somewhat throughout the first few years of life simply to encourage children to pretend play and get physical activity.
As parents consider whether or not to allow their preschooler to use these computer games, remember that when you make learning fun, learning happens easier for many kids. Take the time to explore the options in these games and you are sure to find more than one that fits even the stringent of needs.

Why We Play Games, Part 3

In part 2 of this series we took a look at Creative Expression and Escapism, two significant motivators of the common gamer. The week before that, we covered Challenge and Competition. In this final part we have a look at Socialization and try to tie it all together.
Social interaction is a subject on which we gamers take a fair bit of static from our non-gaming peers. Sometimes this is because they mistake differing priorities for introversion. Wanting to talk about the relative merits of the Western Plaguelands against Winterspring as a post 55 grinding location isn't really any different from wanting to talk about the strength of the Bill's secondary, its just that one of them is relevant to a somewhat narrow audience (give it time.) Sometimes, however, the criticism is merited. We tend to be somewhat socially awkward folk, in part because the hobbies in which we invest a sizeable amount of our time have rigid rules governing most interactions, making them poor training for the free wheeling reality of human discourse. For some gamers, the Social Interaction found in the gaming experience is a primary motivator.
Social activity in gaming occurs on many levels. At a very low level, gaming can be a reinforcer for existing social groups. Think of a group of friends getting together to play a board game or some Half Life. The social activity found in modern online games can be much broader in scope. MMORPGs, to which discussion of the current state of gaming always seems to gravitate, are essentially groups of people that already share some primary common link. The friendships formed through online cooperation and friendly competition can be one of the biggest draws of such games. Anyone who has ever stayed up later than they should because their guild needed them or because someone asked them to has experienced this. These online relationships are no less real, no less significant than their offline analogues. They are, however, different.
The interaction that takes place within a game is structured and often, online gamers see only part of one another. It is difficult for a group formed around a particular activity to bond as deeply as a group of friends that exists solely for the purpose of supporting one another. To avoid turning to diatribe on not forgetting your real loved ones we'll stop following that chain of thought. The important thing is that some game players are purely Socially Motivated. Such individuals thrive online, where other players can be met and interacted with. For these people, the heavier the social component of the game, the better. Interestingly, many games with a high degree of social complexity also have a large amount of the mathematical complexity that may drive away socially motivated gamers. In pure form, this type of gamer is seeking an experience that blurs the line between games and chat environment.
Challenge. Competition. Creation. Escape. Socialization. Five different motivators, all of which combine to make up the motivation of a particular gamer. We could add more, certainly, but these will do for now. So where do we go with this? I'm having to physically restrain myself from drawing a pentagonal map and plotting individual gamers on the five motivational axes. While it would look neat and might be an interesting topic for an esoteric role-playing text, it wouldn't get us anywhere.
A more useful tack, perhaps, is to think about what motivates us individually. Knowing yourself and what drives you can help you figure out what sort of games you should be playing and, more importantly, which will never give you anything but frustration. Understanding the motivations of others can give us insight that will better help us relate. Many arguments over what to do in online games arise because the different party members are motivated differently. A Creative and a Challenger aren't likely to crave the same activities from a night of dungeon delving. Nor are an Escapist and a Competitive going to even speak the same way about a game. For one, a game may be a world waiting for his immersion. For the other, a game is a matrix of numbers waiting to be solved and conquered. We all have a little of each in us and if we can understand what drives us we can both better interact with one another and increase the joy we find in gaming.

Copying XBOX Games

There really is no shortcut to copying XBOX games. In fact, this is a mightily complicated process and has stumped some really techie people. This is evident with the prevalence of the question on copying XBOX games in Internet message boards and tech chat rooms. But why does one need to be going about there and copying XBOX games? Is this not legal?
If you have an XBOX and you have purchased original games to play on it, chances are you must have ran through a huge chunk of your savings. Original games are very expensive and because CDs are not exactly immortal, you can eventually wear out a game especially if you use it every minute of the day.
To give value to consumers, most countries allow original CD buyers to make back-up copies of their XBOX games in case their original got damaged or got lost provided that they are aware of the law against pirated software and that they actually own an original cd and are only copying XBOX games for their personal use only.
While it is relatively easy to do the copying of XBOX games, the same cannot be said in actually using the XBOX games that you have copied. Most software contain an encryption that must be met when inserted in an XBOX. Copying an XBOX game, however, does not copy this encryption. This is a protection system that most XBOX consoles have as protection against flagrant copying of XBOX games.
To be able to run XBOX games that you have copied, you need to modify your XBOX. This can be a daunting task especially to beginners who are afraid of destroying their XBOXes with their tinkering.
According to most tech experts, there are a lot of ways to modifying your XBOX in order to accommodate the practice of copying of XBOX games. Some are quite complicated and only a tech expert could do while other ways can be expensive but easy.
One is to buy and install a MOD-chip. This will allow your console to play XBOX games that you have copied as well as play imported games from other countries with perfect sound and video with no problem at all. While it may seem that all you have to do is purchase a MOD-Chip and then voila, you have another think coming. There are actually a lot of things that you should consider when buying a MOD-Chip. Most recommend the Divineo Modchips, which are purported to be really reliable. Some of the popular brands are the Xecuter 2 and 3, Xenium, SmartXX, X-bit, Alladin, Chameleon and Xchip.
Another way in copying and using XBOX games is to change the BIOS of the XBOX so that it will no longer read the requirements of the digitally-signed software. This is basically reprogramming the whole BIOS.
You might also consider purchasing a bigger hard drive and just save all your games inside the XBOX. This way, you already have copy of your favorite games inside and would no longer need to swap CDs.
The third way is to do the game swapping technique, wherein you will first boot the original CD and then swap the copy once it has already booted up. This might be very complicated and will not actually serve your purpose in copying your XBOX games… that is to preserve your original CDs.

Dice Games 101

Dice games are the oldest and one of the simplest games that perhaps suit all ages. The dice games involved in gambling are one of the most exciting and popular ones.
Dice games have been played since centuries. So old is there origin that the historians do not know the inventor for sure. However, from whatever is available it can be safely said that dice games originated in different cultures around the same time. Illustrations of the games have been found on Egyptian tombs and the ancient Greeks also played the games.
In fact the Chinese dominoes are considered a variation of the ancient dice games. Apart from being a source of entertainment these games were used in the past for other major purposes like for determining future rulers, predicting future events and dividing property. ‘Cleromancy’ is the name given to the activity of casting die or small objects in order to predict the future. The initial dice was made up of pebbles, fruit stones, human or animal bones, sea shells etc.
Today, dice games form a part of the gambling excitement. While the common man uses standard dice, casinos use casino dice. The standard die is cubical in size with dots punctured on each side, counting one to seven. The numbers of the opposite side add up to seven. The standard dice has rounded edges to make it roll easily. The casino dice is more perfect primarily because its money that is involved! The hole punctured are filled with another substance to make each side weigh equal. the casino dice has an equal chance on landing on either side. Other kinds of dice are crooked dice, loaded dice, polyhedral dice.
The most exciting of the dice games played in casinos is ‘craps’. Craps can either be ‘street’ crap or ‘bank ‘crap. However, generally, this games involves shooting die to gat a seven or an eleven which is considered an automatic win and is called ‘craps’. Another game that is played using three die is Grand Hazard. The underlying concept of the game is betting on the outcome of the roll of die.
Shooting of the dice is integral part of some dice games. The activity decides one’s fate in the game. In craps, the player with the dice shoots the dice to a blackboard. The dice hits the blackboard and fall back. The side on which the dice falls is plain luck. However, some players use ‘rhythm rolling’ to control the outcome. By this technique, the player holds and rolls the dice in a manner to get the desired numbers. But this technique requires skill and practice.
Another manner is rolling the dice. Rolling the dice, however, can be manipulated. The player can hold on the dice and throw in a calculative manner to get a desired number. However, the players usually cannot manipulate in the casinos under heavy surveillance.
People who do not play dice games can have fun even collecting different kinds of die. Collecting die can be fun regarding their different shapes and sizes. The die of various casinos even have the name of their country branded on them.

Improving Spelling With Games

You got it! You can do just about any type of learning for a child or an individual learning a second language through the use of various computer games. You are sure to find something that will fit with their needs. You are also able to find a game that will keep them interested. Let's take spelling as an example.
Many kids struggle each and every year at school with that dreaded Friday spelling test. It doesn't get any easier because chances are good that the words just keep getting harder. For many parents, spelling is often a challenge to teach as well. The English language is nothing simple. But, what if you could teach them through the use of a PC game? That would be excellent, wouldn't it?
Think about this. The next time your child comes home with that awful list of twenty words they just have to know, you can easily say to them, "Why not go play a game on the computer." Yes, you can do this!
There are a number of games that are just perfect for teaching children the art of spelling. For example, you might want to try a word puzzle game like Beesly's Buzzwords. Or, if Spiderman happens to be your child's favorite character, you have games like Spider-Man 2: Web of Words. In this game, you child can advance through the levels by correctly spelling words. Its fun, rewarding, and most of all, it will help to improve their spelling capabilities.
The spelling games are not boring, dull, and difficult. To the opposite, these games will hold your child's attention so that they can get the knowledge they need. That is what makes these games different. If you are thinking back to your school days and those boring computer programs you were allowed to play and wondering how your technology loving child is going to play with something like that, don't worry. These games are much different. They are made to stimulate your child's knowledge without even allowing them to realize that they are. To them, they are simply playing a Spider Man game.
The value of these games is huge. In fact, there are more than just spelling games, as we will see down the line. They are great ways to feed your child the knowledge that they need without boring them. When it is fun, it will get played more often. The more that it gets played, the more they can learn from it.
So, then, what is the bottom line? You can easily allow your child to play some computer games but of course, you still need to monitor their usage. And, yes, you may have to practice those specific spelling words each week, but it may just get easier as time goes on. Here's a thought. Replace their favorite computer game with one of these for a week. They still get computer time and they still get to play a fun game. But, you get the satisfaction of knowing that they are playing an educational game as well. All in all, we think these games may be a great way to boost confidence and knowledge. Consider them for any age of child. You'll be happy that you did.

Why We Play Games, Part 2

Last week we started to get into the motivation of the gamer. We discussed challenge and its ugly stepsister competition, two of the most common motivators. Today, we look at two more on the way to forming an overall model for what moves us.
Perhaps less common than the first two motivators, creativity is nonetheless an important driving force in the gamer psyche. Though at first gaming doesn't seem like a particularly creative act, what with its formalized rules and structured systems, there is much more room for self expression than one might think. Some games play to this directly through unique presentations or artistic themes. Music games and many of the Sim titles are basically just expressive outlets that happen to be governed by a computerized system of rules. Other creatives find their outlet in multiplayer gaming. The modern MMORPG sports equipment and decorative combinations numbering well into the millions. The Creatively Motivated gamer takes pleasure in designing how their character looks as well as changing how they interact with their environment. Creatively Motivated gamers thrive when outlets are available. Anything involving a high degree of expression, decoration, or a large abstract component draws them. They wilt in gaming environments governed purely by numbers, and in those where presentation is extremely homogeneous.
Though we sometimes don't like to admit it, escapism is a motivation that lives in the heart of every gamer. By design, a game creates an inherently different world. Even games which have as one of their primary goals simulation of some aspect of the real world recast the player into some role they find more exciting than their own. Escaping into the role of adventurer, pilot, quarterback or even zookeeper provides motivation for nearly every gamer. Escapism Motivated gamers seek out games where the environment is rich, comprehensive, real. They thrive in worlds where suspension of disbelief is high, where they can lose themselves in the depth and complexity available to them. They gravitate toward role playing and simulation, environments where the world is rich and believable. They tend to avoid abstract games where the underlying reality is difficult to believe or understand. It is a strange sort of paradox that MMORPGS, with their incredibly deep histories and expansive worlds, are not as attractive to Escapism Motivated gamers as pure RPGs. This effect arises from the multiplayer aspect. Players talking in a public channel about out of game topics or, worse, about the mechanical and numerical aspects of the game world may well ruin the escapists experience and cause them to seek the company of non player characters or others who share their motivation.
Much has been made of the downside of escapism. A gamer who spends too much time in a world not their own can begin to lose touch. This sort of disassociation with reality can, and has, lead to all sorts of problems with work, school and personal relations. This does not mean, however, that escapism is itself an unhealthy thing. It is a basic part of the human experience. The reason we vacation, watch moves, enjoy sporting events or go camping is inherently escapist. As people, we are often unsatisfied with out lot in life. It's natural to seek out activities that allow us to experience something outside of our day to day. Gaming is no different. However, as gamers, we are an oft misunderstood community. We owe it to ourselves and to the world at large both to fight with information, by spreading the positive realities of gaming and gamer culture, and to fight internally against obsession. No matter how good a substitute for the real world a game may seem it is, in the end, only a pastime. Leave it once in a while.
Next week, we conclude with Social Interaction. Then, we'll move on to some sort of unified theory about all this.

Why We Play Games, Part 1

There exists some ephemeral quality that separates gamers from the rest of humanity, some thing that makes us, us and them, not us. I've never been able to quite put my finger on it, but it is inescapably there. Today, in hopes of moving closer to that essential quality of gamerosity, we examine part of what makes us tick. In particular, we take a look at what draws different types of gamers to the hobby. Every gamer plays for different reasons, but there are common threads that tie the experience together.
Many gamers are motivated by the challenge a game can present. Success in a game may be governed by any of a wide variety of abilities. A First Person Shooter requires twitch reflexes, a steady hand and the ability to remain calm under pressure. A word puzzle game may require an extensive vocabulary and the ability to rethink the uses of old words, but no measure of speed. A sports simulation might well require an in-depth knowledge of the topic, in addition to arcade skill, but is unlikely to have terribly much concern for linguistic acumen.
The common thread is that all of the games challenge some subset of a player's abilities. This challenge can be a powerful motivator. The Challenge Motivated gamer is drawn to a game that tests their skills, preferably one that tests them to their limits. The gamer may also be motivated by the natural improvement that comes from working at peak. They are driven then, not only to excel, but to improve. Challenge Motivated Gamers thrive whenever a game pushes their skill set of choice, but may be disinterested in games that fall too far away from the target.
Competition is a close cousin of challenge. Many gamers are driven by the need to prove they are the best, to be pitted against their fellows and come out on top. Competition minded gamers range from those looking for a challenge in a fair fight to the sort of win-at-all cost leet speaking infants that give us all a bad name. Competition can be easy to take too far. There is nothing inherently wrong with being driven by competition. To some extent, competition is merely challenge taken to the extreme. It is only when it leads to mistreating your fellow player that it begins to become less a motivation and more an unfortunate personality quirk. Competition Motivated players thrive on those games where they are pitted against one another with the outcome dictated by skill at playing the game. They will often wane in those environments that either require cooperation, such as many MMORPGs, or in games where skill plays a much smaller role, such as in less sophisticated card or dice games.
Next week we will take a look at some other common gamer motivations, including Creativity and Escapism

A Choose Up Game - One Of My Best Games

The teams were picked and the line ups were announced. I was batting third. I could not wait to hit. Hitting to me was like eating for a fat man with a tape worm. I lived for the experience. I knew even before I batted that I would get a hit. I was so young and cocky! After the first two guys on my team made outs, I strolled up to the plate, as confident as Babe Ruth - pointing to center field in the 1934 World Series when he called his famous home run. Digging in and sneering at Donnie, I was determined to smack that pill. First pitch was a high and tight fastball... Wow baby
I got out of the batter’s box and stared at Donnie. I was thinking fastball for his next offering. I was right. The ball came in so big. I could see the red seams on the ball. Boom! I connected on that real sweet spot on the bat. All batters love that sound. That crack that sounds so solid. Pitchers hang their heads when they hear that noise. It’s like the strike of chalk on a backboard, they hate it. The ball jumped off my bat and sailed over the left and centerfielder’s heads. It was a shot and a half. As I rounded the bases I got a glimpse of Mr. Ginsburg, the high school coach, watching me round the bases. This was Major League stuff.
A few innings later.....
Gazing at Donnie, I thought how much more determined he looked, as I went to bat for the second time. His brow was crimped and his eyes were staring. With a runner on first he was pitching from the stretch. His leg glided toward home his arm raised high, he flung the ball at me. I do not know what kind of pitch he threw. What I do know is that I hit a rocket about 15 feet over the third baseman’s head down the left field line. As the ball rolled and rolled I scampered around the bases as if I was being chased by some animal. I saw home plate in my head as I ran. And as I rounded second base I again saw Coach Ginsburg now watching the outfielders race after the ball. I hit third base with authority and sped home for my second round tripper in two at bats. My teammates congratulated me. The stands were buzzing again. I remember my friends jumping up and down with big smiles on their faces. I felt wonderful. Two times to bat. Two home runs, against our high school star pitcher. This game was a fantasy baseball dream come true.
I was Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Willie Mays all rolled in to one that day

Games for the Whole Family

Oh no, another rainy day? Too much snow outside, and too many children inside? Too many mosquitoes? Well then, it’s time to stay in and have fun! There’s so much you and your family can do together inside that needn’t include getting hot, frostbite, or bitten.
You can head to the kitchen and whip up your family’s favorite cookies or pancake recipe. Take turns adding ingredients and everyone can be involved. You could curl up around the fire and read books or do puzzles. You can even get out some board games like checkers, chess, or Parcheesi and have some good, “old-fashioned” fun. But why stop there?
Games tables make for an exciting and unique option for indoor family fun. Pool, Foosball and Air Hockey Tables are all great pieces you might consider adding to your home as a way to beat those boredom blues. While these tables typically allow for only two players at a time, you can partner up or get creative with the rules to make sure everyone can be included. Eight- and Nine-ball pool games can be played with teams, foosball tables typically have room for two on a side, and air hockey games can rotate people in and out of position to defend the goals.
Why play together? Not only does spending time together improve your family relationships – father and son or daughter, mother and daughter or son, and between siblings, and yes, even between mom and dad! – it’s just plain fun. Playing games such as these teaches the kids how to get along with others while engaging in some healthy competition.
Teaming up sibs that might normally be bickering might be a way to teach them to get along with each other better. (Of course, it may also set them up to nit-pick each other even more, in which case you’ve got a different situation on your hands!) Mix it up and play mom and son against dad and daughter; it will help your kids stay close to you, especially as they enter adolescence and puberty.
You might even get a little exercise along the way as well. While not quite a cardio workout, playing at a games table like air hockey, table tennis or foosball can get your heart pumping a bit, especially if you’re really getting into the game. If mild exercise is your goal, stick to a two player game – you’ll have to move around more and more activity increases your heart rate!
No matter your motivation, whether it’s getting out of the weather, spending some time with the kids in the kitchen, around the living room or even getting a little bit of exercise with a games table, there are lots of different things you and your family can do to play together. Your only limit is your own imagination – and the size of your space! So head on inside, get comfortable and play with your family. Only good will come of it. Have fun!

The History of Games

The history of games goes back thousands of years. The earliest game in the Museum's collection dates from the 16th century. Games have rules and the main objective of any game is to win, whether it is played by individuals or teams. Some games are also designed to be used as learning tools.
Board Games
The strategy game and the race game are the two main types of board game. The race game appears in all sorts of guises: educational, moral, competitive and fun. A race game involves two or more players competing against each other in order to win.
Race games can be simple or complex. The simple ones require a single playing piece that is moved along a set track on a playing surface from start to finish, for example Snakes and Ladders.Strategy games are usually played by two people and require at least some degree of skill. These can be subdivided into several different categories: war games that involve capturing, such as Chess and Draughts; hunting or chasing games, such as Fox and Geese and Chinese Chequers; and alignment games, such as Nine Men's Morris and Connect-4.
Cards
While standard playing cards have been around for centuries, children's card games have only appeared relatively recently. Happy Families, for example, was first published in the 1860s.
Playing cards are thought to have originated in China around the 7th century and were introduced into Europe in the late 1300s. They were and continue to be used for gambling, games of skill and fortune telling. Playing cards aimed specifically at children did not appear until the 18th century. Unlike adult playing cards, children's cards generally have pictures on them, are educational, and were often published by the same companies that made board games.

Outdoor Games
The Museum's collection of table and outdoor games includes marbles, a game played in ancient Egypt and Subbuteo, a football game, invented in the mid 20th century.
People in ancient Egypt and pre-Christian Rome played marbles and the game has been played in England for at least four hundred years. From the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th, Germany was the centre of the world marbles trade. Originally, as their name suggests, they were made from chips of marble, later, cheaper versions were made from baked clay or glass.
Names given to marbles vary considerably from town to town and country to country. English children talk of taws (the actual marbles) and the varieties, commoneys, stoneys, potteys and the best marbles, allies, which were made from alabaster. American children know their marbles as kabolas, steelies, jumbos, milkies, and peewees in descending order of size.
There are three basic types of outdoor marble games: circle games, chase games and hole games. In a circle game, marbles are knocked out of a circle or some other space in which the boundaries have been set. In a hole game the goal is to shoot marbles into some sort of opening. In a chase game, players have alternate turns shooting at their opponents' marbles. The skilful marbles' player must have a steady hand, accurate aim and plenty of practice. To propel a marble it should be balanced in the recess of a bent forefinger, the thumb is put behind the forefinger. The player then holds his hand on or close to the ground, takes aim, and flicks his thumb sharply forward to shoot the marble at its target. The player may squat, or kneel on one or both knees to obtain the best aiming position. Any forward movement of the hand while shooting the marble is forbidden.
The British and World Championship is held at Easter every year at the Greyhound pub in Tinsley Green in Sussex. Only one particular game is played which is a variation on the circle game.
Puzzles
The jigsaw puzzle has been one of the most consistently popular toys for more than two hundred years and played with by both children and adults. The jigsaw puzzles that we know today were not created until the introduction in the 1870s of the jigsaw itself, a machine with which an irregular pattern could be cut. Dissected puzzles were the forerunners of jigsaws. They were very simply made by placing a picture on a piece of wood, usually mahogany, and cutting (dissecting) it into shapes. Some pieces might interlock, but most of the puzzle was just pushed into place. The puzzle pieces would have come with a box, usually with a guide picture on the lid.
A Londoner named John Spilsbury is credited as the first person to make a dissected puzzle as a toy for a child. John Spilsbury was apprenticed to Thomas Jefferys of St Martin’s Lane, London, in 1753, and in 1763 he was listed as an ‘engraver and map dissector in wood, in order to facilitate the teaching of geography.’ He died in 1769, and although part of his business continued, the company stopped making dissected maps. Established manufacturers of board games were quick to take up this new toy. As well as maps, other popular themes included history, significant events, biblical stories and industrial and agricultural processes.
Maze games
The best known maze games are the simple ones where the aim is to guide a small ball through a maze enclosed in a box. The ball usually has to be rolled from one end to another or from the outside to the centre. This type of toy has been around since the end of the 19th century and some early examples used mercury instead of balls. The Silver Bullet and Trench Football are larger types of this game and have the added hazard of holes along the path of the ball, which have to be avoided. These games were both made during World War I, a fact that is emphasised in their design. In Trench Football the names of German commanders, including the Kaiser Wilhelm II who is in goal, appear next to the holes. The Silver Bullet, also called the Road to Berlin, has the names of German towns.
Maze games continue to be popular and many are produced very cheaply. One of their modern incarnations is the video game, with Pacman being one of the most famous examples.

What used to be, and is still is, an added bonus on the newspapers, it now has become a very popular online game. From cross words to action packed detective games, indeed puzzle games never fails to spark our interests. When it comes to word puzzle online games, there’s the ever beloved crossword puzzle where you have to solve for the correct words described either across or down the puzzle piece.
At this time, crosswords puzzles have been given various twists. Another popular word game is the Book Worm. This is just like Scrabble but with a twist wherein you advance to different levels if you reach a certain amount of points, get very big points for forming words that are recommended, use the burning tiles in a word before it reaches the bottom row of the word tiles, and use the golden tiles for extra, extra bonuses. This game is also good for enriching your vocabulary especially when you accidentally form a word that you never thought existed before.
Another word game is the Text twist. In this online game, you are given a certain number of letters and you are required to make as many words as you can from the given set. The words that you form must not be a given name of a person or place, and must be composed of three letters minimum. In order to get to the next level, you must get to use all of the given letters and form the longest word or one of the longest words if there are more than two of those, in five minutes. In short, the ruling is that you have to form, or guess, the longest word by using all the letters given in a space of five minutes. Even if you came up with only the longest word, you can still advance to the next level. If you guessed or formed all but the longest word in time, then you can not advance to the next level.
The latest addicting puzzle online game is Sudoku. Being around for hundreds of years now, this game does not use words or letters but uses numbers. In this game, you are presented with eighty-one squares. In the entire game piece, numbers from one to nine are randomly placed in boxes. Shooting Games – Why And What Are They

Now is this the question to be asked!!! They just exist because they are shooting games! And they are just shooting games!!! Feel like paid in same coins? Well, there is an interesting story that lies behind the curtains. The shooting games were originally had in mind for the hunters who wanted to develop their hunting the target skills. Such games got found international recognition hundreds of the years back when ancestors thought that this is not only an art, but it is something that to be appreciated. Finally shooting games were highly encouraged by different sport associations. There is no doubt that the game requires great deal of coordination and discipline with perfect eye that can judge the distance and the object. Speed is another criterion that comes every now and then when you are at shooting.
Turning the table again, shooting game was again thought to have more fun than actually it was been proclaimed. The virtual shooting sport improved the confidence of the physically deprived individuals and such games tested a player's ability in marksmanship and strategies. But then, what about the people who do not want to go to the field where they are given heavy rifles with only few functions!!! Kicking off this old tradition, the manufacturers of computer or video games came up with ultra modern shooting games that not only changed all the definition of excitement but they also proved that shooting games online or on computer or TV is more popular than carrying real rifles, wearing goggles and earplugs on the field!!!
Here, rifles are never to be serviced though they are million times more powerful than the original ones! This made children crazy and adolescents mad!!! Shooting games then brought revolution in online gaming zones wherein millions of players started playing such games online – free of cost. Target shooting, skeet shooting, trap shooting, short/long distance shooting were now very old fashioned since the ultra modern hi-tech arms supplied in shooting games were highly empowered with zoom (crosshair) and the bullets that were more deadly than what we have at real gun-store! You can launch missile, have night-vision camera fitted on the gun and most importantly, you get bullets free of cost, somewhere in the box or behind the doors!!!
Shooting games have redefined the entire genre of the action games in video/computer games. Psychiatrists do believe that such shooting games or action games do sharpen hand-to-mind connection and the player, if playing positively, can improve their adroitness and judging skills. More often, players playing such games also have many dimensional thinking since they always think about how to accomplish the mission without losing any energy or the main character. The shooting games that are played with a squad (two players or more) improve the communication skills and teach the teamwork, as admitted by some of the game experts.
Overall, shooting games were introduced as just games to win points but over the times, they have become passion that millions of players across the world play and remain hale and hearty!

Classification Of Games

There are many people who control the classification of games that are played online and there are other entities that control the games played at home that can be played online. Most games for home use require no ratings because they are deemed appropriate for all ages. Some of the online games are classified so that they are suitable for use by children, young adults and adults over the legal age.
While these are safety precautions to ensure that all people enjoy the games most suitable for their age group, the online gaming community is unsettled by the controls that are placed on their games by people who have no right to control what they do because they are played on the internet.
Many people hate the classification that pertains to the games that they are allowed to buy because the legalities of the classifications are not equal on all sides. Many parents have no control over which games their children play on because the online games are played in another home environment.
The online video games that have the capability of accessing the internet will work with many consoles suited for home use. These online games are classified again with a rating for the amount of violence that is portrayed by characters that are not real. Younger children may be exposed to these games and think that the monsters in them are real.
The rationale of online gamers is that the real-life action and gore is only achieved in a virtual world and becomes real when the player brings it into real life. Many gamers never intend to expose the younger children to the unsettling details in their video games and parents feel relieved of responsibility when rules are set for game playing that specifically mention gamers from keeping them away from siblings.
Since they can operate through the unfettered realm of the internet, many people think that they should be able to play what they want no matter what type of visuals comes up on the screen. Parents are inundated with pleas that they feel they can not refuse. These games are the latest craze in gaming and if their child is excluded from them there is a chance that they will not fit in with the in-crowd at school and be an outcast in their local neighborhoods.
Games were supposed to bring families closer by allowing them to spend quality time with each other. Some families think that prohibiting such games will settle the dilemma that they face but kids can be very adamant about the games that they want to play. Parents are left with few choices and hope that future trends for games will return to providing entertainment that is suitable for the whole family to enjoy together.

All New Puzzling Games

The adventure and puzzle genres of video gaming dates back to the early days of video gaming and was quite popular. The main reasons for this to happen were two-fold: they were not graphically very demanding and they needed lot of time to complete. Adventure games kept the player interested by making them solving the riddles within. With a puzzle game, there were chances for the challenges to get revamped up slowly and endlessly.
As you might be aware of, the early champion of adventure games was Sierra Entertainment. They created smash hits on the PC like King’s Quest, Police Quest and, Space Quest. They also managed to release early adult-themed games, like the infamous Leisure Suit Larry series. These games were able to offer players a chance to go on a journey in mythical lands or gritty urban streets. Quite often they were filled up with serious and humorous moments that would delight players for many hours continuously.
Although, the adventure genre of video gaming has experienced a serious downturn with the advent of RPG games and FPS games, there’s still hope for the adventure fanatic.
And on console, most of these adventure games have mainly lived on in the form of horror games. For instance, Resident Evil series has managed to receive two major picture productions and three sequels. Many of these console adventure games add in a bit of action so as to help maintain interest in the video game player.
The puzzle genre is a unique category of games because of the fact that they never really utilize the full power of modern technology. Instead their focus is mainly on timed challenges or difficult problem solving that requires extreme reflexes and quick reaction. The most famous puzzle game of all, Tetris, was insanely popular on the omnipresent Gameboy handheld system by Nintendo. In fact, Nintendo continues to heir the puzzle genre of video gaming with smash-hit titles like Mario Party, Mario Pinball Land and Wario World etc. Today, games are much more user friendly than games of the past. Games are so user friendly and attractive to the eye that in most cases, adults enjoy the games as much as if not more than the younger generations. To find out further information about video games, log onto the internet today there is a plethora of information available video gamers.
